Booking.com against HRS: Where Do Hotels Cost Less? There is no fixed answer, as the price depends on hotel, date and rate. A sensible comparison looks at the final price with taxes and fees, the cancellation rule and the loyalty scheme.

Worldwide against a German focus

Booking.com is a global site with a very wide range of accommodation. On its own site HRS calls itself one of Europe's three largest hotel portals, with a special focus on business travellers. Both sell hotel rooms, but daily use differs on cancellation, payment and what an account gives you. We read the Booking.com help pages and the HRS FAQ, terms and home page (October 2026).

Price, taxes, fees

Booking.com quotes the price for the room and the whole stay, not per person. The property decides whether taxes are in it, and you see it when you compare options. By its own account Booking.com charges no reservation fee. Child costs come extra, and breakfast is set per room.

HRS typically shows room prices per room per night. For several nights an average nightly price may appear, with the exact breakdown in the booking process. Breakfast or parking are included or extra depending on hotel and rate. According to the HRS terms, hotels must display the final price including taxes, but the figures come from the hotel, and which taxes apply abroad depends on local rules. Travellers pay HRS nothing; HRS earns a commission from hotels. For changes and cancellations HRS takes no commission, says its FAQ.

One detail: if you use the Pay online function, the terms say a transaction fee may apply, shown before you pay. Watch for that line.

Cancellation

HRS: a standard booking can frequently be cancelled for nothing up to a fixed hour on the day of arrival, with 6 pm local time as HRS's own example. That does not hold for every hotel and rate. Discount and special rates may require prepayment or limit cancelling. With a guaranteed booking the hotel holds the room for a late arrival, but a no-show may be charged. Changes and cancellations go through your account or by phone.

Booking.com: the property sets the fee; free-cancellation bookings carry none. Non-refundable rates may carry one, and you can ask through the booking for a waiver. Dates cannot be changed then. The cancellation rule is in the confirmation.

Paying

Many HRS bookings are paid directly at the hotel, some rates require prepayment. A credit card may be needed as a guarantee, for example for guaranteed reservations, late arrivals or non-refundable rates. Payment terms are visible before booking, per the FAQ.

On Booking.com the property mostly collects the payment itself, often at check-in or check-out, and some ask for a deposit. Options are cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Sofort in Germany and Austria and, in some countries, instalments. Only the property issues invoices, so business travellers should clarify that first. At HRS, per the terms, hotels are instructed to issue the invoice when you use Pay online.

Loyalty programmes

At HRS the myHRS account is free. HRS lists benefits such as savings of up to 50% at selected hotels, free cancellation until 6 pm on arrival day at most hotels, late check-out and upgrades (subject to availability), reusable booking templates, plus automatic rebooking when the price falls. Miles and points come on top: with Miles & More and BahnBonus, 1 euro equals one mile or point.

Booking.com Genius gives 10% off stays after sign-up, 10 to 15% after 5 bookings in 2 years, 10 to 20% after 15, with breakfast and upgrades at select properties and priority support at Level 3. The discount applies at participating properties only.

The difference is in the build: HRS offers Miles & More and BahnBonus, Booking.com a discount that grows with your number of bookings. Which one gives more depends on your habits.

Customer service

HRS advertises round-the-clock support for members. Reviews on HRS come only from guests who booked through HRS and stayed, according to the FAQ. On Booking.com you settle payment and invoices with the property, and customer service handles the rest, with a direct agent at Genius Level 3.

Who each one suits

Booking.com is our first recommendation for anyone who values wide choice and clear help pages. That is especially useful for holidays, apartments and trips abroad, and Genius works from the first sign-in.

HRS pays off for business trips and city breaks in Germany when plans wobble: the late cancellation time, booking templates and miles are built for that. If you use Miles & More or BahnBonus, you collect points there. Check each time whether the deadline applies to your rate.

If saving is the goal, run both prices for your hotel. We give no general statement on who is cheaper.

Cashback

Both are at daily cashback: the Booking.com page and the HRS page. Start there, book in one session and switch your ad blocker off. Current rates are on the TripPrice pages for Booking.com and HRS.
