Booking.com vs Trivago: Where should I book hotels? The honest answer starts with a difference: Trivago does not sell rooms. The site compares offers from many booking sites and passes you on, and Booking.com is one of those sites, where you book directly. We recommend Booking.com as the place to book because its help pages name price, fees and cancellation clearly. You use Trivago as a search tool next to it. Status October 2026.

What Trivago does and does not do

According to the Trivago help page you enter destination, travel dates and number of guests, see several offers from different booking sites for each property and click through to the one you choose. Reservation and payment happen there. Trivago cannot manage your reservation, and only the booking site answers questions about it. The help advises double-checking the details at checkout.

The search has filters, for instance for deals with free cancellation or breakfast included. If you want to sort hotels roughly first, that gets you to a shortlist quickly.

What is in the price

Trivago says the displayed price should include all taxes and additional charges such as VAT and booking or service fees, per room and night. The prices come from the booking sites, not from Trivago, and Trivago points out that a booking site may show the price without taxes or fees. After the click the price can change.

On Booking.com the price covers whatever is listed for the room type. Breakfast, taxes and service charges show up when you line the options up, and again in your confirmation. For taxes it depends on house and country. For the reservation itself Booking.com charges nothing, says its help page.

Cancellation and changes

If you want to cancel or change a booking made through Trivago, the help says to contact the booking site directly. Its contact details are in your confirmation, and Trivago links to the help pages of many sites.

At Booking.com a booking with free cancellation costs nothing as long as you keep the deadline. After that, or on rates without refund, the property can set a fee. Other costs you pay directly to the property.

Payment

At Trivago itself you never pay, because payment goes straight to the booking site. Ask there which payment methods are possible. At Booking.com credit cards are the most common method. In many countries PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay come on top, in some countries also instalments through third parties such as Klarna or Affirm. The offer differs by country, currency and device.

Some properties want a deposit up front, which can cover the whole amount. At others everything falls due at the property. The payment rule for your booking is in the confirmation.

Genius as an extra

Booking.com includes the free Genius programme. Whoever signs up starts at Level 1 with 10 percent off stays, worked out on the price without taxes and charges. 5 bookings within 2 years lead to Level 2, 15 bookings to Level 3. The benefits apply at participating properties, 850,000 according to the page.

Who suits whom

For the booking itself Booking.com fits if you already have a property in mind or want a clear set of payment and cancellation rules to read. If you book often, Genius gives you levels and pays off at participating properties. This is our recommendation for the actual booking.

Trivago suits you if you have no hotel yet and want to see which sites offer the same room. Then you book where the total with the cancellation rule works for you, and that can be Booking.com too.

Both together: sort at Trivago first, then compare the final amount on the booking site with the one at Booking.com.

Check prices yourself

TripPrice keeps a provider page on Booking.com. To hold Booking.com against another booking site, the text Booking.com against Agoda helps.

Cashback at Booking.com

Booking.com is also represented at daily cashback. The current rate is on the shop page for Booking.com, and from there you reach the provider. Stay in the same visit until the booking is done. With a discount code the cashback can drop away.

Frequently asked questions

Is Booking.com or Trivago cheaper?

That is not directly comparable, since Trivago shows offers from many booking sites, Booking.com among them. The final amount in the last step counts.

Can you book directly on Trivago?

No. Trivago hands you over to the booking site, which takes your details and the payment. Changes also run through that site.

Are Trivago prices including taxes?

According to the help, taxes and fees should be in the price, per room and night. The booking site may display it differently, so check the final amount before paying.

Does Booking.com charge booking fees?

Per its help page Booking.com charges nothing for the reservation. What the property itself asks, such as city tax, stays unaffected.

Why does the price change after the click on Trivago?

Trivago says the price can differ after the redirect. What counts is what the booking site shows in the checkout.
