Firefly is a Malaysian airline that has been flying since April 2007 and belongs to the Malaysia Aviation Group. It connects Penang and Subang with destinations in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, and more recently with Sabah and Sarawak. It makes sense for travellers flying within Malaysia or to the neighbouring countries who want to book directly with the airline.
What you can book there
You book flights from the hubs Penang and Subang. The airline also offers extras: sports equipment, meals to pre-order, lounges and ground services. There is a balance account, the FY e-wallet, which you can use to pay for flights, extras and taxes, and the Firefly Passport as a package. If you collect points, you can use the Enrich loyalty programme that Firefly runs together with Malaysia Airlines. According to the airline, the fleet consists of 12 ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft.
What a booking really costs
With a turboprop airline on short routes, the extra costs are the real price. Hand baggage may only be taken in the permitted number of pieces, size and weight. If you exceed it, you pay a charge under the fees schedule, and excess hand baggage is checked in at the gate. Checked baggage and sports equipment are better booked in advance. The sports equipment option is limited to four kinds: golf clubs, surfboards, bicycles and diving gear. On ATR aircraft it is 20 kilograms, on Boeing 737-800 jets higher steps are possible. You can buy it up to two hours before departure, at the counter only up to 20 kilograms and subject to availability.
It is best to pre-order meals when you book. Note that pre-ordered meals are not refunded and cannot be changed within 48 hours of departure. So decide whether it is worth it before you click.
Cancellation and payment
Packages such as the Firefly Passport are non-transferable and non-refundable, and if you do not show up the fuel surcharge is forfeited without a refund. Deposits into the FY e-wallet are also non-refundable. If Firefly cancels a flight and you do not agree to the replacement time, the airline refunds the amount, which is then valid only for 90 days as credit. For ordinary flight bookings, changes and refunds depend on the fare, so read the conditions when booking. The help centre has topics on payment by FPX, Maybank EzyPay, QR payment and multi-currency. The booking flow shows which payment methods are available to you.
Entry and current notices
The home page shows current notices, for example on the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card that foreigners must complete before arrival, on new entry requirements for Thailand and Indonesia, and on rules for power banks on board. Read them before you travel, because they affect your hand baggage and your documents. A temporary suspension of jet flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore is also mentioned there. Check the current notices for the routes you book.
How to save
You save most with flexible travel dates and by paying only for the baggage you really need. If you fly often, work out whether the FY e-wallet or the loyalty programme pays off. You can also collect cashback through daily cashback. You can see the current rate and current vouchers and deals on our provider page.
Booking with cashback
Cashback runs through daily cashback. Here is how it works:
- Open the daily cashback store page for Firefly.
- Click through from there to Firefly.
- Book as usual, in the same browser and without interruption.
- Complete the booking and keep the confirmation.
The cashback is credited once the trip is confirmed.
Tips

- Book sports equipment and meals only if you are sure you need them, as they are non-refundable.
- Read the entry notices, especially the Digital Arrival Card for Malaysia.
- Pack power banks according to the airline's current rules.
