Booking.com and Expedia compared: final price, cancellation rules, payment, Genius versus One Key and which platform suits whom.

Booking.com against Expedia: Which Portal Wins on Hotel Prices? There is no fixed answer, as the price depends on hotel, date and rate. A sensible comparison looks at the final price with taxes and fees, the cancellation rule and the loyalty scheme.

Two big names, one price check

Search for a hotel and you land on Booking.com or Expedia quickly. Both show rooms, photos and reviews. For your wallet other questions matter: what is in the final price, until when does cancelling cost nothing, when is the money taken and what do you get for coming back? We read the Booking.com help pages and looked up the One Key loyalty scheme for Expedia (status October 2026).

Which fees apply and how cancellation and payment work is something you only see on Expedia once you open an offer as far as the booking step.

What the price contains

Booking.com quotes the price for the room and the whole length of stay, not per head, unless the room type says otherwise. The property decides whether taxes are included; you see it when you compare options and later in the confirmation. By its own help page Booking.com does not charge a reservation fee. Each room has its own breakfast rule. Extra costs for children come on top and sit in the house rules.

A crossed-out price on Booking.com is, by its explanation, the third-highest price of the hotel in the 30 days around your arrival, compared on the same meal plan, cancellation policy and room type. It says nothing about the price on Expedia.

For Expedia, the amount in the last step is what counts. Note the total, included taxes, breakfast and what is due on site, such as a local tax. Then the comparison rests on the same ground.

Cancelling

On Booking.com the property decides what a cancellation costs. With free cancellation you pay nothing; on a non-refundable rate a fee can apply. You may ask through your booking whether the property will waive it. Dates cannot be moved on a non-refundable booking, though you could rebook if the request succeeds. The rule is in the confirmation, and after cancelling an email should arrive.

On Expedia it depends on the rate. Our advice: if your dates are unsure, pick the rate with free cancellation, write down the deadline with its time of day and keep the confirmation.

Paying

Booking.com: the property usually collects the money itself, often at check-in or check-out. Some ask for a deposit, up to the full amount. The card is often only required as a guarantee, with a test charge that is returned. Cards are the most widely accepted, plus PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay depending on country, Sofort in Germany and Austria or TWINT in Switzerland. Some countries offer instalments through Klarna and similar services. Only the property issues invoices, so ask before check-out.

On Expedia you see the payment method per rate in the booking step.

Loyalty programmes

Booking.com Genius begins with a free sign-up and 10% off stays, worked out from the price without taxes and charges. Collect 5 bookings within 2 years and you move to Level 2 (10 to 15%, plus breakfast and upgrades at select properties); with 15 bookings Level 3 offers 10 to 20% and puts you first in the support queue. 850,000 properties are said to take part.

Expedia uses One Key, which according to a Vrbo help page also covers Hotels.com and Vrbo. You collect OneKeyCash and trip elements. The tiers are Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum; Silver needs 5 elements a year, Gold 15, Platinum 30. Counting only starts at 25 US dollars, with taxes and fees left out, and for hotels one room per night makes one element. Status runs until 28 February of the next year. Airline frequent-flyer points can be collected on top, says the help page.

Service

For payment and invoice questions Booking.com sends you to the property, for everything else there is customer service. Genius Level 3 adds a direct line to an agent. Expedia shows its contact options on its own site.

Who each one suits

Booking.com is our recommendation if you really want to read the terms before you book. The help pages are clear, the cancellation rule is in the confirmation and Genius applies from the first sign-in. If you book stays often, that gets you discounts on hotels and rental cars without detours.

Expedia is an option if you want to collect credit across flights, hotels or rental cars and build one balance through One Key. Then look at the rate terms in the booking step.

What we do not say: that either site is cheaper in general. You have to put both side by side for your hotel and your date.

Cashback at Booking.com

For Booking.com there is cashback through daily cashback. Start on the Booking.com shop page, book in one session and check the current rate on the TripPrice page for Booking.com. For Expedia we have no provider page of our own.
