Booking.com vs Airbnb: Which is cheaper for holiday rentals? No answer holds for every trip, because nightly rate, cleaning and fees shift from property to property. We put Booking.com first and recommend it, because besides hotels it lists apartments and holiday homes, and its help pages say plainly what is in the price and who collects the money and when. Airbnb sits next to it factually. We read the help pages of both providers in October 2026.
What is in the price
Booking.com says the price covers all facilities listed under the chosen accommodation type. Taxes and service charges show when you compare options, and whether they are included depends on property and country. By its own account Booking.com charges no reservation fee. Important for families: costs for children are not automatically in the price and are listed in the house rules.
On Airbnb the price is made up of the nightly rate, the host's own fees such as cleaning, and Airbnb's service fee. Under the split model guests carry a share: the help page gives a range of 14.1 to 16.5 percent of the subtotal excluding taxes, and that is not a free extra. Under the single model the host pays the whole fee. In countries with regulated price display, taxes appear in the breakdown.
Who collects and when
At Booking.com the property usually issues its own invoice and takes the money itself, often at check-in or check-out. Some ask for a prepayment that can reach the full amount. The card often serves only as a guarantee, with a test hold that is returned. An invoice also comes only from the property, so ask for it before you leave.
Airbnb handles payments itself, and you change the payment method only there. Extra charges outside the platform are allowed only in a few cases, and only if they appear in the price at checkout, such as resort or utility fees. Most hosts may not ask for a security deposit. Hotels bookable through Airbnb may take a card as a guarantee at check-in if they disclosed it beforehand.
Cancelling
Booking.com: the property decides the fee. A free-cancellation booking costs nothing while non-refundable rates may carry a charge. You can ask in your booking whether the property will waive it, though dates cannot be changed on such a rate. After cancelling you should get an email, and if not, ask the property after 24 hours.
Airbnb: the host sets the rule. You see it on the listing page, at payment and in the confirmation. For some homes you can extend the free window up to 24 hours before check-in for an extra payment. If a rule applies to particular dates, the check-in date decides. The service fee comes back only if you cancel within the free period or the host refunds everything. If the host cancels, you get everything back plus help finding a replacement.
Loyalty and protection
Genius at Booking.com is free. Level 1 gives ten percent off stays after sign-in, applied to the price before taxes and charges. Level 2 follows after 5 bookings in 2 years and Level 3 after 15 bookings in 2 years. The discounts apply at participating properties, 850,000 worldwide according to the page. Airbnb does not advertise a comparable scheme for guests.

Which suits whom
We recommend Booking.com if you have not settled on hotel, apartment or holiday home and like to pay at the property. A few trips a year get you to Genius Level 2 quickly. That does not mean Booking.com is cheaper in every case.
Airbnb fits if you look specifically for private hosts and like uniform handling through one account. Then check the fee breakdown before paying and the total over all nights.
A comparison only works when nights, party size and cancellation rule are the same.
Cashback with Booking.com
Booking.com is on daily cashback. Open the Booking.com page, go to the provider from there and book in one session. The current rate is on the provider page. For Airbnb we offer no cashback.
