Booking.com against Hotels.com: Where Are Hotel Prices Lower? There is no fixed answer, as the price depends on hotel, date and rate. A sensible comparison looks at the final price with taxes and fees, the cancellation rule and the loyalty scheme.
What this is about
Booking.com and Hotels.com often list a similar room for the same hotel. What differs is rarely visible in the results: when you pay, what a cancellation costs and who rewards you for coming back. We read the help pages of Booking.com and looked up the shared loyalty programme behind Hotels.com. Status is October 2026, and providers change their rules without notice.
How cancellation and payment work on Hotels.com only becomes clear in the booking step of the individual offer. Read it there before you commit.
Price: what is inside the number
On Booking.com the price shown is for the room for the entire stay, not per person, unless the room type says otherwise. Whether taxes are included depends on the property and accommodation type. You see it when you compare options and again in your confirmation. Booking.com also says it does not charge a reservation fee. Extra costs for children are not in the booking price and are listed in the house rules.
The crossed-out rate is not a saving against other sites. According to Booking.com it is the third-highest price the hotel charges in the 30 days around your check-in date, with the same meal plan, cancellation policy and room type. So when you compare Booking.com with Hotels.com, only the total in the last booking step counts.
For Hotels.com you have to check it yourself. Put both offers side by side: same room, same nights, breakfast yes or no, taxes and fees in the final amount, local city tax on site. Which site costs less depends on the hotel and the date. A blanket statement would not be backed up.
Cancellation and payment
Booking.com: the property sets cancellation fees. If the booking is free to cancel, nothing is due. Non-refundable rates may carry a charge. You can ask in your booking management whether the property will waive it, but dates cannot be changed on such a booking. Your cancellation policy is in the confirmation. After cancelling you should receive an email; if nothing arrives within 24 hours, ask the property.
On Booking.com, the property usually charges you, often at check-in or check-out. Some properties ask for a prepayment, up to the full amount. A card is often only needed to guarantee the booking, with a test hold that is returned. Options include cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and in some countries instalments through services such as Klarna. Only the property can issue an invoice.
For Hotels.com, cancellation and payment depend on the rate you pick, shown in the booking step. Check the deadline with its time of day, and whether you pay online or at the hotel.
Loyalty programme
Booking.com calls its scheme Genius. Level 1 starts after you sign in, with 10% off stays, applied to the price before taxes and charges. Level 2 follows after 5 bookings in 2 years with 10 to 15%, Level 3 after 15 bookings in 2 years with 10 to 20%. From Level 2 Booking.com lists free breakfasts and room upgrades on select stays, from Level 3 priority support. The discounts apply at participating properties only, 850,000 according to the page.
Hotels.com uses One Key, which according to a Vrbo help page also covers Expedia and Vrbo. There are four tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Silver needs 5 trip elements a year, Gold 15, Platinum 30. An element counts from 25 US dollars excluding taxes and fees, and for hotels it is one per room per night. The reward is OneKeyCash for future bookings.
Customer service
Booking.com points you to the property first for payment and invoices, plus customer service through your booking. Genius Level 3 adds access to a live agent for changes to your stays. For Hotels.com, its contact page shows how to reach customer service.

Which one suits whom
We recommend Booking.com if you want price, cancellation rule and payment method spelled out on a help page and are happy to pay at the property. Genius pays off from the first booking because Level 1 applies at once, and a few trips a year get you to Level 2. For most city breaks and holidays that is our pick, without saying Booking.com is the cheapest site for every hotel.
Hotels.com fits if you already book with Expedia or Vrbo and want to collect credit through One Key, so every booking counts in one account. If you go that way, read the cancellation and payment rule of the rate before you click book.
What stays true for both: same room, same nights, same total. A small price gap rarely makes up for a worse cancellation rule.
Adding cashback
Both are on daily cashback. Open the Booking.com page or the Hotels.com page, go to the provider from there and book in one session. The current rate is on our provider pages for Booking.com and Hotels.com. On Hotels.com the cashback is lost if you use a discount code.
